Are you a Dad or male carer that has to use public toilets to change your child’s nappy? Even for mums it’s not easy; long queues, impatient little ones in busy confined and often noisy washrooms. So, can you imagine not having a changing table at all? Well, that is the reality for most Dads who are frustrated with not having adequate and safe facilities to change their child’s soiled nappies. One frustrated father has launched a campaign to try to change this for the better. His objective is to have suitable baby changing facilities as standard in all washrooms. Putting your child an unhygienic floor or other unsanitary surface of a public toilet is often the only option. However, this Dad has come up with a makeshift solution. His squatting technique is uncomfortable and awkward, but at least it works, however there are better solutions. For generations parents have used baby wipes to clean their child while changing their nappies. Recently, there has been a new trend that has seen baby wipes being marketed to adults for use while using the toilet. Traditionally, people use tissue to wipe and then proceed to flush it down the toilet once done, this process works just fine. However, the new trend of using “flushable” wipes raises concerns due to the aftermath of the flushing process. When a toilet is flushed, the raw sewage is funnelled to a nearby waste water treatment plant. Debris in the water is then physically removed by machines. Baby wipes do not breakdown due to the fact that they are synthetic and non-biodegradable, as apposed to tissue paper, which is made of organic material. This creates significant problems for the machinery as baby wipes are prone to getting stuck in gears and pump impellers which will need to be repaired at high costs. “Water UK analysed blockage material taken from 54 sewer blockages across the UK. They included some in London, where samples were taken with help from Lanes Group wastewater engineers. It found 93 per cent of all identifiable blockage material was non-flushable wipes. Of that, 75 per cent, by weight, was baby wipes, while 20 per cent was cosmetic wipes, surface cleaning wipes, and feminine hygiene products. It has been well documented that pollution in the UK is at dangerous levels – but did you know that air fresheners could be a part of the problem? A report conducted in 2016 by the Royal College of Physicians, has warned that it is not just outdoor pollution that people should be concerned about. Butane is particularly bad for human health; the gas is a central nervous system depressant which can dramatically decrease activity of the brain, affecting physical and mental responses. The chemicals are solvable in body fat and pass rapidly to the brain and organs, where they take effect quickly. Although the initial effect only lasts a few minutes, this can be exacerbated in the colder periods due to areas being less ventilated; allowing the effect to last up to an extended 40 minutes. With adverse weather conditions affecting most of the UK over the past week, nature has forced business owners, schools and colleges to consider emergency floor protection. Heavy snow and ice mixed with grit and salt has not only created a huge mess, but a health and safety nightmare! Nowadays, the threat of a law suit if a floor becomes a slip hazard is a very real fear, but this is completely avoidable with AHS barrier matting. September is the start of the academic year and is arguably one of the busiest times of the year for parents and children returning to Nursery and School. Making sure your child’s hands are washed could prove to be a challenging experience. This year has seen a rise in cases of Threadworm infections reported in nurseries around the country. Threadworms, also known as pinworms, are tiny parasitic worms that infect the large intestine of humans. Threadworms are a common type of worm infection in the UK, particularly prevelent in children under the age of 10. Worms appear white in stools and look strikingly similar to small peices of thread.
